Mal

I’m a designer and technical leader with a background in theatrical & film production and themed entertainment. My work ranges from scenic and media design to sound engineering, show control, and special effects, with experience spanning community theater, educational programs, and large-scale live entertainment.

Projects that require creative problem-solving and innovation are my passion. Whether working with volunteer teams or professional technicians, I aim to build trust, maintain safety, and support a shared vision from concept through execution.

Great experiences are built through collaboration, planning, and a willingness to adjust when conditions change. Every production teaches me something new, and I carry those lessons forward into the next project.

Hi, I’m Mal.

I approach design as both a storyteller and a problem solver. Whether building a full environment, engineering a technical system, or crafting a single prop, my goal is always the same: to serve the story and immerse the audience. The most successful designs are felt before they’re noticed and leave people wondering, “How did they do that?”

I’m comfortable working within limitations and often find constraints can enhance creativity. Budget, space, time, and technical boundaries shape my work rather than restrict it. I enjoy translating big ideas into practical solutions through innovation and thoughtful execution.

My approach is strongly influenced by Walt Disney Imagineering, classic Spielberg and Lucas films, and theater that achieves scale through intention rather than excess. I’m inspired by designers who see potential instead of obstacles and use illusion and detail to create experiences that feel timeless. From Imagineers repurposing simple materials into believable worlds to modern productions like Operation Mincemeat proving that minimal elements can transport an audience anywhere, I believe innovation works best when it supports the story.

I take pride in creating moments that feel immersive and captivating. When the mechanics disappear and the audience is fully engaged, the design has done its job.

My Approach

Technical Direction with Creative Intent

As a technical director, I enable spectacle by making complex systems safe, repeatable, and reliable. I believe safety is what allows creativity to grow. When systems are stable and teams are supported, performers can take risks and push ideas further.

Leadership and Collaboration

My leadership style is grounded in trust and respect. I prioritize communication and shared ownership so teams feel supported and confident in their work. Whether working with volunteers or professionals, I strive to create an environment where people feel empowered to do their best work and safe to create.

I approach technical direction as a collaborative process, translating creative goals into clear execution, supporting teams under pressure, and making real time decisions that protect both people and creative intent.
